What “Plant-Based” Means on a Cleaning Bottle

Why the ingredient, dose and route after use matter more than the leaf on the label

A plant-based bottle claim may describe one ingredient while leaving the full formula, useful dose and route after cleaning unanswered by the label.

According to Clyde & Co’s account of a South African advertising decision, the front of a Sunlight Platinum dishwashing-liquid bottle offered a wonderfully simple fact: “100% plant-based active.” On the back, smaller words said that other, unnamed, non-plant-based active ingredients were also present. The account says a consumer noticed that the two statements seemed to be answering different questions and complained to the country’s Advertising Regulatory Board.1

Clyde & Co reports that Unilever supplied independent expert evidence for a surfactant made through biological fermentation. The account did not identify the expert or describe the assessment method. A surfactant is the part of a cleaner that helps water lift grease and dirt. According to that account, the evidence supported the ingredient’s plant origin, renewability and biodegradability.1

Clyde & Co’s account says the Board found that “100% plant-based active” could mean that the whole product was plant-based, that every active ingredient was plant-based, or that one active ingredient was plant-based while others were not. The account says only the narrowest reading matched the formula described in the case, the qualification on the back could not repair the larger front-label impression, and Unilever was directed to change the claim.1

The story did not end with the ruling. Bizcommunity reported that Unilever had received until the end of December 2026 to change the affected Sunlight range, and that the Board said the extra time did not approve the replacement artwork.2 No specific replacement wording was approved. The ingredient fact had survived; the sweeping impression had not.

That distinction makes “plant-based” useful again. It can tell a real story about where some chemistry began. The label can still answer one clear question. It cannot carry every other question about what is in the bottle, how well it cleans, what it may do to a person handling it, or where it goes when the cleaning is finished.

A plant can supply the starting material, not the answer

A cleaner is a mixture built to do several jobs. Surfactants loosen and suspend oily dirt. Water softeners help them work in different water. Enzymes tackle particular stains. One ingredient’s origin cannot describe all those functions or the evidence needed for each of them. Each job calls for its own proof.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency makes a related origin point about cleaners marketed as “natural.” It says these products typically use chemicals made from corn or other biological sources rather than petroleum, but their ingredients can be chemically identical to petroleum-derived versions. If the molecule is the same, its possible effects during and after use are the same too.5 The starting feedstock matters for resource use, but it does not rewrite the molecule. Its source and its behaviour remain separate facts.

Two current product pages show the difference. The ingredient list and dose tell different parts of the story. Sunlight lists several kinds of ingredients, including surfactants, perfume and colourants. It tells the user to add “a squeeze” to warm running water and carries eye and swallowing precautions, but the page gives no volume for that squeeze.3

Seventh Generation’s concentrated Free & Clear laundry detergent supplies a different kind of detail. The word “squeeze” still leaves the earlier amount open. It describes the product as 96% biobased and certified under the Environmental Protection Agency’s Safer Choice programme. Its ingredient list identifies plant-derived cleaning agents and enzymes alongside mineral-based salt and synthetic preservatives.4 “Biobased” has a percentage; “plant-derived” is attached to named ingredients; neither phrase has to pretend that every part of the formula shares one origin. The detail lets a shopper see where each claim stops. Sunlight is a Unilever brand3. Seventh Generation’s own page says its products are services of Unilever United States4. The comparison is about label detail, not independent companies.

The lesson is smaller and more practical than a verdict on plants or petroleum. Find the noun and the denominator. Does the percentage describe one ingredient, every active ingredient, or the complete formula? Once that is clear, the safety, performance and environmental questions can be asked on their own terms. That small check prevents one fact from standing in for five.

The useful dose becomes a released dose

The laundry label gives the next part of the story a size. A medium load takes 22 millilitres. A large or heavily soiled load takes 29 millilitres.4 The cleaner must use enough chemistry to do its job; an ineffective dose can encourage rewashing or extra product. Here, that simply means using enough product to clean the load. A chosen amount makes that path easier to judge. When the cycle ends, the useful dose has become part of the wash water. The next question starts at the drain.

Cleaning-product ingredients normally reach the environment through evaporation or by being rinsed down a drain. Sewage treatment removes or reduces most of them. That protection matters. It is why a household wash routed through standard sewage treatment cannot be treated as the same exposure as a cleaner sprayed or rinsed directly into outdoor water.6

The environmental concern begins before any claim of damage from one household load. The route changes how much of each chemical reaches nature. Some surfactants can be toxic to aquatic life. Some break down slowly. Others break down into new substances with hazards of their own. Origin alone cannot settle any of those points. Ingredients containing phosphorus or nitrogen can add nutrients that support algal growth and loss of oxygen, although the Environmental Protection Agency says cleaning products are usually a small contributor compared with other sources.6

The real risk therefore depends on more than the feedstock. It depends on which chemical was used, how much entered the water, how quickly it broke down, what it became, whether sewage treatment intervened and what concentration finally reached fish, invertebrates or other aquatic life. One broad leaf cannot show that chain.

A conclusion about one product needs each link in its route to be shown. The available sources do not supply product-level amounts, so this article stops at the pathway rather than drawing a product-level conclusion. The present evidence supports taking the pathway seriously without pretending that every plant-derived cleaner, every uncertified cleaner or every ordinary wash causes aquatic damage. That boundary keeps concern tied to the evidence.

The route changes the test

The Environmental Protection Agency’s Safer Choice criteria treat “biodegradable” as the beginning of an assessment, not its end. They combine three things: how toxic a surfactant is to aquatic organisms, how quickly it breaks down, and whether that breakdown produces substances of concern. A more aquatically toxic surfactant must break down faster to qualify.7

Products that usually bypass sewage treatment face stricter criteria.7 That difference turns a vague green claim into a question anyone can use: where will this cleaner go after it works? That one “biodegradable” word hides the full check. Where water goes changes what good proof looks like. A whole formula assessed for direct release is better evidence for a direct-release job than a leaf, a feedstock word or one biodegradable ingredient. The whole formula matters at that point.

There is evidence that screening can change chemistry without abandoning function. In 2012, the Environmental Protection Agency assessed nonylphenol ethoxylates, surfactants used in detergents and other industrial applications. It reported that these chemicals and their degradation products can break down slowly and be highly toxic to aquatic organisms, then identified eight safer alternatives.8 That is evidence for replacing one surfactant class. It is not a promise that every substitute, or every plant-derived alternative, is safe in every use. A better option still needs to fit its actual use.

The standard has to preserve the job as well as reduce concern. Safer Choice reviews every ingredient in a product, including proprietary ingredients supplied by third parties, and reviews formula changes. Certified products must also meet performance requirements.5 A cleaner that fails at its task is not improved merely because its front label sounds gentle. Cleaning power stays part of the check.

Different protections answer different questions

South Africa’s advertising decision dealt with the overall meaning of one package claim. It did not create a worldwide definition of plant-based. The European Commission’s detergent page lists separate materials on surfactant biodegradability, detergent labelling, fragrance allergens and phosphorus compounds.9 Those controls are useful, but none turns the words “plant-based” into proof about a whole formula. The rules check parts of the product, not the leaf. No single mark covers all of them.

Safer Choice is a voluntary United States programme. It goes further than an origin claim by reviewing every ingredient and performance, but it is still evidence within a defined programme and jurisdiction. Its mark answers a set of named questions. It does not mean zero exposure, settle the performance of a different formula, or establish what happens in every wastewater system.

Human-health evidence needs the same discipline. Cleaning-product chemicals can present eye, skin or respiratory irritation concerns, and concentrated products can create greater handling exposure.6 The Sunlight page’s own eye and swallowing precautions make that immediate enough to act on.3 Use instructions and safe handling matter now. Hands and lungs meet the product first.

The sources here do not establish a long-term causal illness from ordinary use of either named formula. They also do not provide an all-clear. Repeated exposure to current whole formulas, including sprays and fragrances, remains a separate long-term question. Those long-term findings remain unavailable, but the pack’s handling directions still answer what to do now. The lower-regret choice does not need to wait for that question to be settled: ingredient disclosure, route-appropriate assessment, safe handling and an effective measured dose all address things already known. People can use those checks now.

Let the label do one job well

At the shelf, start by asking what the plant percentage counts. A shopper can make that check in seconds. A named ingredient is different from all active ingredients, and both are different from the complete formula. Then look for full ingredient disclosure and an independent whole-product standard that checks ingredient hazards and cleaning performance. A fragrance-free option may help when fragrance matters, but it cannot answer unrelated aquatic or formula questions by itself. The label becomes a map, not a verdict.

At home, use the smallest labelled dose that performs the job. For the laundry product described here, that means distinguishing its 22-millilitre medium dose from the 29 millilitres specified for a larger or heavily soiled load.4 Keep an indoor product in its intended sewered route. When use will bypass sewage treatment, look for whole-product assessment for direct release rather than assuming that plant-derived or biodegradable is enough.7

The package needs its own evidence. It is separate because the cleaner and its pack follow different routes after use. Safer Choice includes packaging rules as well as formula checks5. For the pack, ask whether the bottle, closure and label can come apart, and where each material is accepted after use. No collection route for either named pack was verified here, so the article does not tell readers that either pack is recyclable. Prefer one of two lower-regret routes: natural material that can safely break down, or a material that can be recycled again without losing quality. Price, availability, transport, preservation and cleaning performance can all limit the available choice; those trade-offs belong beside the claim, not behind it. A clear label should show both.

The leaf on a cleaning bottle need not disappear. It needs a smaller job. Let it point to the origin of a clearly named ingredient or share of the formula. Let disclosure explain what else is present. Let measured performance decide the dose. Let toxicity, degradation and release-route evidence answer what happens after cleaning. Those jobs can sit side by side. A true plant-based claim becomes more useful when it is no longer asked to prove everything.
