The Problem
We bought the bottle that was meant to last. That was the deal: one durable object, less waste forever. Then the refills started arriving — and every one of them is a new little piece of rubbish wearing the halo of the jar it feeds. Month after month, a handsome vessel sits on the shelf pretending to be the whole story, while underneath it, a stream of pouches and pods piles up with nowhere to go. The mechanism is simple: the refill — the part we actually throw away — is the part nobody redesigned. It's a foil-and-plastic laminate fused so tightly the layers can never be separated. It's a mixed-plastic pod. It's single-use with better lighting. And it multiplies: the more faithfully we refill, the more of it we buy. We paid a premium to stop adding waste. The waste just moved — smaller, quieter, hidden inside the promise. The jar stays beautiful. The bin does the accounting.
The Gap
The materials exist. Aluminium that recycles forever. Glass that threads into standard necks. Compostable materials already proven — in one niche. Someone needs to assemble them. Nobody has, because the refill that's cheapest to make is a pouch, and a pouch is the problem. This is a market gap.
What Should Exist
A refill that docks into the container you already own — and leaves nothing behind. Not a new system. Not another jar. The one on your shelf, fed by refills that end cleanly.
- One material, all the way through — single-metal, single-glass, or verifiably home-compostable (solids and semi-solids only, and we'll say so)
- Standard necks — docks to 28/400, 24/410, 38 mm jar threads you already have; no proprietary parent pack purchase, ever
- Honest seals — natural rubber only, cure method disclosed, user-replaceable, roughly 2–3 grams
- Nothing hidden — no laminates, no mixed-plastic pods, no silicone gaskets, no PVC, no "better plastic"
- Refill economics that respect us — cheaper per mL than the first purchase, no loose parts, one-handed use
- Published payback — the use-count where the system breaks even, and the end-of-life route named for where it's sold in the UK
The Honest Position
This won't do everything. Home-compostable units carrying liquids with long shelf lives aren't there yet — the technology hasn't been published, and we won't pretend otherwise. Glass refills are heavier and can break; metal carries its own weight in transport. And near-universal neck fit isn't universal fit. Some bottles will wait.
