The Disinfectant That Tells You What's Left

You sprayed the worktop, wiped it, and put the bread down. The label names the active and the kill standard. It says nothing about what is still there once it dries. No label does.

The Problem

You wiped the worktop with an antibacterial spray. It looked clean. It dried. You put the bread down on it.

And you cannot find out whether anything is still there. Not because anyone is hiding it — because nobody measures it, and nobody publishes it.

These products work by staying. That is the engineering, and the front of the bottle says so: keeps working, long-lasting protection. Persistence is the feature you are paying for. It is the right feature in a hospital, a care home, a food plant, or on a worktop raw chicken has just crossed. In the right place it is the whole point.

But most days there is no raw chicken. Most days there are crumbs, a tea ring, a smear of yoghurt — and for those, hot soapy water is what the food safety guidance actually recommends. It is also free.

Somewhere in the last few years the extra act became the ordinary one. The bottle moved onto the worktop and stayed there. The film it leaves is one you never chose and cannot measure. They say the amount is small. It probably is. Small is not a number you can check.

The Gap

One plastic-free refill drop on mainstream UK shelves declares its active by name and concentration, and states the named European kill standard it meets at thirty seconds. Rigorous disclosure, and it deserves credit. On the same page: nothing about what remains.

Kill, measured to a standard and published. Residue, measured against nothing. That holds across the category — including the brands whose chemistry would pass. The refill revolution solved the packaging and never touched the chemistry, and nobody mentioned that was where the improvement stopped.

What Should Exist

A disinfectant for food-preparation surfaces that does its job and then stops being a disinfectant.

  • An active that decomposes into things that are not biocides — peracetic acid from TAED and sodium percarbonate, leaving acetate, water, oxygen and soda ash: what our great-grandmothers scrubbed with.
  • A published residue position — what remains, at what level, by what named test method, after realistic use. One wipe, yesterday's cloth. Not a laboratory.
  • A single dose in glass or steel — tablet in an uncoated paper sachet, made up fresh, kept in the cupboard rather than by the kettle. No plastic bottle, no dissolvable film.
  • Scope printed as a restriction — food-prep surfaces only, with the pack stating that hot soapy water handles the rest.
  • No persistence claim anywhere. Stopping is the product.

The Honest Position

We are not asking for residue-free. Nothing leaves nothing. Soda ash is a residue — a food-safe salt that can dry pale on a dark worktop, and we would print that too. The demand is that what stays is not a biocide, and that you can read what it is.

Slower, narrower, unscented. If you want a spray that keeps working all day, this is not it — and that product should keep existing.
