The Bedroom Air Purifier That Tells the Truth

Eight hours a night, we inhale the polymer fibres our bedding and carpet shed. A sealed HEPA unit sized for a 30 m³ bedroom is the best single intervention we can buy — if it tells us what it actually catches.

The Problem

We lie down in the room we chose for its quiet.

Above the pillow, at the height of our sleeping breath, the air holds around 528 polymer fragments per cubic metre — ninety-four percent of them smaller than 10 micrometres, the fraction small enough to travel past the nose, past the trachea, past the cilia, and settle in the distal airways where the lung runs out of tools to clear anything away.

The lung retires keratin. It retires cotton fibre, skin flakes, yeast. It does not retire polyethylene. It does not retire polypropylene. It does not retire polyester. Samples of human lung tissue now carry PP and PET fibres, permanently, with no biological pathway to removal. Whatever arrives stays.

What arrives is the house we live in. The duvet cover is polyester. The mattress topper is polyurethane. The carpet is nylon. The curtains are polyester on polyester. Every one of these objects has been shedding into the breathing zone since the hour it arrived, replenishing through the night, for the entire duration of our sleeping inhalation.

The regulation measures the sphere. What arrives is the fibre.

The Gap

The market sells this box in large numbers. What it doesn't sell is honesty.

Every unit on the shelf advertises "99.97% at 0.3 µm" — which is the single worst point on the filter's efficiency curve, its mathematical minimum. Above 1 µm, the fibre is easier to catch, not harder. The sellers won't explain this, because it would mean explaining the test they didn't run.

Cabinets arrive glued shut. Cartridges are proprietary. End-of-life is a skip.

What Should Exist

A bedroom air purifier sized for the room we actually sleep in, rated against the particle size actually reaching us, and built so we can open it when it breaks.

  • EN 1822 H13 or H14 certificate — the cert number printed where we can read it, not on a factory page we never see.
  • Bypass leakage declared as a number — ≤0.1% of system airflow, tested per EN 1822 Annex D. A sealed filter that leaks fifteen percent around the gasket isn't sealed.
  • Air changes per hour for a 30 m³ bedroom — not "up to 50 m² of living area." The room we sleep in is a 30 cubic-metre box, and that's the number we want rated.
  • A cabinet that opens with a screwdriver — metal or FSC wood, mechanically fastened, no adhesive, no ultrasonic weld.
  • A filter cartridge in a standard HVAC dimension — or a takeback scheme operated by the seller. No proprietary lock-in.
  • An EC fan sold as a spare part — with a part number, a published drawing, and ten years of availability.
  • A PCB that's a module — not resin-potted, replaceable at year twelve when the firmware gives up.
  • Under 30 decibels on sleep mode. Under 1 watt on standby.
  • No ioniser. No electrostatic stage. No UV-C in the airflow. No photocatalytic oxidation. No plasma. No "active oxygen." No "bipolar ionisation." At any operating speed. These stages produce ozone, and ozone does not belong in the air we breathe for eight hours with our mouths open.

The cert number. The leak number. The repair manual. On the label.

The Honest Position

This will not be the cheapest box on the marketplace. Precision-engineered, screwdriver-openable, metal-or-wood housings cost more than injection mouldings sealed with glue. A ten-year spare-part chain costs more than a two-year warranty. This is a premium appliance and the premium is the point.

The unit is not a whole-house answer. It works for the 30 m³ room we breathe in for eight hours. Daytime air, elsewhere, is a different question and a different lever.

And the filter media itself — borosilicate glass-fibre paper — has no clean recycling stream in the UK. That's why the takeback has to be operated by the seller. Not promised. Operated.
