The Baby Cleanser That Shows Its Chemistry

Your baby's skin is 30% thinner than yours and absorbs everything dissolved in warm water. The wrapper carries the names. The chemistry under the names — impurity grade, synthesis pathway, fragrance breakdown, tear-free mechanism — is undeclared.

The Problem

An infant's stratum corneum is 30% thinner than an adult's. Transepidermal water loss runs five times higher in the first weeks of life — seventeen times higher for premature infants. Surface-area-to-body-weight is roughly three times an adult's. Whatever the bath water dissolves crosses that barrier faster, lands at a bigger dose per kilogram, and meets a liver whose detoxification enzymes haven't fully switched on.

Bath time is the ideal absorption condition: warm water, mechanical agitation, occluded skin contact, two to four minutes of held exposure, twice a day. This is the chemistry the wrapper does not declare.

The mild-named co-surfactant in nearly every "gentle" baby wash carries an impurity range a hundred times wide inside one ingredient name — the impurity, not the parent molecule, is what causes the contact allergy. The "plant-derived" primary surfactant has a sensitisation rate climbing in adult patch-test registries; the pediatric data is thin. The "from coconut" mild-syndet is condensed from sodium isethionate made by reacting ethylene oxide with bisulfite — the same upstream chemistry that produces 1,4-dioxane as residual. The single word parfum on the back of the bottle is permitted to cover up to two hundred undeclared compounds. Tear-free can mean the surfactant is genuinely mild, or it can mean a cationic compound is numbing the corneal nerve so the eye stops reporting the sting. The wrapper does not distinguish.

The Gap

We looked. The eight-axis chemistry sheet — synthesis pathway, impurity grade, chain linearity, fragrance breakdown, tear-free mechanism, formulation pH, format-class, chelator identity — is not published by any UK or EU baby cleanser brand. The chemistry exists in the supply chain. The Certificates of Analysis exist at the supplier level — pharmaceuticals receive them per batch. Nobody has written them onto the bottle a parent reads.

What Should Exist

A baby cleanser whose brand publishes the chemistry the wrapper was never designed to carry — voluntarily, freely, per batch.

  • Primary surfactant declared by grade — sodium cocoyl glutamate or linear (≥80% chain-spec) decyl glucoside, total active 4-7%, pH 5.5 at 1% solution, single-supplier contract named on the chemistry sheet
  • Tear-free by mild chemistry — declared — no quaternary ammonium, no PEG-15 tallow polyamine, no cationic anaesthetic compounds; the mechanism is mildness, written on the wrapper
  • No ethoxylated ingredients — no isethionates, no laureths, no PEGs, no polysorbates; third-party tested per batch for 1,4-dioxane below 0.1 ppm, results published
  • Fragrance-free, or one named botanical hydrosol with chemotype declared — never parfum as a single word
  • A chemistry sheet linked from every product page — synthesis pathway, impurity grade, format-class, preservation system, pediatric-cohort dermatology testing protocol with sample size and age range. Not gated. Not behind a signup.

The Honest Position

This is a premium product. Sodium cocoyl glutamate runs three to five times the price of standard surfactant per kilogram of active. Third-party batch testing is a real cost. A pediatric cohort dermatology study takes six to twelve months before the data is presentable. We are not promising cheaper sustainable; we are demanding chemistry transparency at a price the eczema-cohort and high-vigilance parent already pays for the bottles that don't carry the data.

For the first four weeks, the NHS recommends water-only bathing. This is the cleanser for when one is needed.

The Investigation: The Coco Question — how the 1973 trade-association vocabulary on the back of the bottle was never designed for the parent reading it.
